The shields of the earth

by Jean-Louis Coraboeuf

"The princes [נדיב, nadyib, prince, willing heart] of the people gathered together, the people of the God of Abraham; for the shields of the earth [מגנ ארצ, magen eretz] belong to God; He is exalted above all" (Psalm 47:9).

God’s plan is to unite all men who are well disposed (towards God) to the people of Israel, to be a precious aid to them: to be Magen Erets, i.e. earthly shields. Those Magen Erets belong to God, He is their Lord, raised in sovereign power over them.

God knows that His people will always remain a small people in the midst of the nations, and he has also made sure to appoint the Church to take the place of a shield on the earth. God is stationing His Magen Erets around Israel; they are His army on Israel’s ground.
