Their shadow is removed

by Jean-Louis Coraboeuf

"Only do not rebel against the Lord, neither fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us... Their shadow is removed from over them, but the Lord is with us. Fear them not" (Numbers 14:9).

The Hebrew phrase "their shadow is removed" means they will die soon. Indeed, the lack of shade means no protection. So Joshua and Caleb had received that the inhabitants of Canaan – the land they should conquer – were helpless in the eyes of God.

The Psalmist said, "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty" (Psalm 91:1). The closer we get to God, the more we are in His shadow and enjoy His protection.
