Martha was pulled at...

by Jean-Louis Coraboeuf

"But Martha was pulled at [perispao] much serving [diakonia]" (Luke 10:40 Interlinear).

The Greek verb perispao literally means pull in another way, divert one's spirit, distract, pull at. Service diakonia for people is a good thing for Jesus, Himself, came to serve [diakonéo] humankind (Matthew 20:28). But Martha let herself overflow with her diligence to serve Jesus.

Jesus is not opposed to service diakonia, but to the fact that we can be completely occupied doing something for Him, as He asks us to "seek first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness" close to Him. Jesus said to Martha the better part [meris, portion in a sharing, part in a inheritance] was to be close to Him, listening Him and not bustling about serving Him.
