You are my friends

by Jean-Louis Coraboeuf

"but I have called you friends [philos], because I have taught you all that I have learned from my Father" (John 15:15).

A friend is someone to whom we are bound in affection. Thus friendship only truly exists when there is a real mutual exchange in this relationship. It is on account of this that goodwill is engendered in each for the other.

Because he is bound to us, Jesus teaches us everything he learned from his Father (John 15:15). Our response will be in our closeness to Him... which will bring about his accomplishment through our faithful practice of his commandments, "You are my friends [philos] if you do what I command you" (John 15:14).
