Let us look unto Jesus

by Jean-Louis Coraboeuf

"And let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking [aphorao] unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith" (Hebrews 12:1-2).

The Greek word aphorao means 'to look', 'to gaze at', 'to look away'; it is composed of the preposition apo denoting a separation from something, and of the verb horao meaning 'to see with the spirit', 'to know'. Our spiritual eyes must be separated from something to see Jesus and know Him.

When we go through a trial (the race), we must turn our eyes away from the test and gaze at Jesus. For He is the Author of our faith and He is the One who will lead our faith to perfection through trials.
