Alienated from the life of God

by Jean-Louis Coraboeuf

"Having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance [agnoia] that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart" (Ephesians 4:18).

The Greek word agnoia literally means 'lack of knowledge'. This word is the origin of 'agnosticism', the philosophical doctrine that considers God inaccessible to human intelligence and therefore denies man's ability to consider Him or seek to know Him.

The apostle Paul says that the very origin of this ignorance comes from hardness of heart. Then this ignorance darkens man's thoughts making him insensitive to spiritual things and alien from the life of God. Man is then delivered to the vanity of his thoughts.
