The promise of life

by Jean-Louis Coraboeuf

"Paul, the apostle of Jesus Christ, by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus" (2 Timothy 1:1 Interlinear).

Certainly, the promise of life that God has made us is eternal and total (1 John 2:25). But here, as an apostle, Paul seems to speak of his calling as being registered also in eternal life. And therefore, he writes to Timothy to encourage him to practise the spiritual gift he has received.

God’s promise of life is also for now, during our terrestrial life; it involves all the spiritual gifts we have received through grace. By recalling his ministry, Paul also brings back to Timothy’s memory his own ministry and reminds us, too, of the gifts that we might have neglected for some reason or other.
