Love will cover a multitude of sins

by Jean-Louis Coraboeuf

"Therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. And above all things have fervent love for one another, for 'Love will cover [kalupto] a multitude of sins' " (1 Peter 4:7-8).

The Greek verb kalupto means 'to cover', 'to hide', 'to keep secret' –, the intention being to keep something hidden by remaining silent about it. To sin is literally 'to miss the target'. Therefore sin concerns only God and the person who misses His target, consequently exposing himself to the attacks of the enemy.

love does not excuse sin, but prevents its knowledge. Our attitude therefore will be not to judge this person, but to love him enough to be willing to pray for him or her, so that, through our intercession we will help to bring the sinner back into God's way (James 5:19-20).
